Things I Miss Just a Little Bit: The Butler Street Coin-Operated Laundry

I do miss having a laundromat on the block. I miss having my quarters sometimes count. I miss my few dryers which didn't have holes cut into them to collect the loose change fallingfrom tumbling pockets. I miss my triple-loading machine that was labeled for $4 but would secretly accept $3.75. I miss the washer that had a broken door needing to be slammed extra hard to seal it but when people didn't know this after they put in their money they walked away and I would use it at their expense.

I will miss these nights in Pittsburgh. Now that I've signed the lease to the place in Brooklyn it's time to start packing up.

Ill-timed but well-intentioned, I invited folks over for one last meal and party. Throwing down two days after Christmas meant a lot of people weren't able to make it out as they have families of their own and such. What about my needs?

G20 - September 24, 2009 - The Winds of Change Sweep Through Lawrenceville, carrying hope, angst, tear gas and ripe body odors

Thursday, September 24 2009

Later that day...

I ran to my observation tower and gazed out upon the landscape. The air was thick with tension and heavy with the aromas of the unshowered masses. "Help Keep Lawrenceville Clean!" I shouted. They only strummed banjos and banged beat up drums. Maybe they couldn't hear me. I decided to get a little closer.

Old, Drunk Man on Eden Way

On my way to see my dad for his birthday, I spotted this old man walking down 41st St and on to Eden Way. Every few paces he would stop. Pause. Continue. I didn't know if it was the beer or the old age that had slowed him to a crawl.

As he neared 42nd St, he stopped to rest the weight of his frame against the large stone wall the held the bank's parking lot above street level. He seemed to be in agony or delirium, and he's just another one of many in the same situation in the neighborhood.

This truck is usually parked outside of the apartment on Butler St. The owner is scrap collector so the bed of the pickup is typically filled with things like fridge doors, radiators and stoves.
