Pap's Ninety-Fifth Birthday Party

I was back in Pittsburgh for the weekend to hit Pap's birthday brunch. The party begins at precisely the amount of time it takes to get Pap and Grandma from St. Alphonsus after 8AM mass in Wexford over to Aunt Pat and Uncle Rob's house in Ingomar.

I walked to my Aunt's from my parent's place almost a whole two blocks, a distance in the suburbs usually traveled by car. This amused my mother.

Visit to Pap and Grandma's, December 29th, 2012

My sister and I had lunch at the new and luxurious Whole Foods in Wexford. Afterwards we went over to visit with the old folks. Grandma's looking a little frazzled but the Christmas cacti and the poinsettia are blooming on time, as usual so everything's OK. Pap's enjoying his new LED reading lamp, a Christmas gift. We had no iced tea today though Grandma offered about 3 times. I had too much kombucha at lunch.

Old Age Will Not Stop an Old Man from Working Outside

I visited the old folks again. Signs were everywhere that old age wasn't enough to prevent Pap from trying to work on something somewhere.

Checking in with the Grandparents, June 10, 2012.

I dropped by Pap and Grandma's place to catch up and check in. We sat on the swing under the tree and drank iced tea as usual.

I told them I was back in town for work but not the specifics. I'm working with the Persad Center but I think explaining their mission might shock the old folks a little bit.

Pap's Own, Personal, Wooden and Paper Jesus.

Pap's wooden Jesus, typically on display on the lawn, has had (and shows) lots of wear. I have no idea how old this thing is.

Japan, Day Minus Two. Or One.

I left my car at the grandparent's place, waved goodbye (as always), and rode with my parents to PIT.

From there I took a flight to LAX, dealt with the terminal to terminal shuttle madness, waited, disoriented and hungry, for the long flight to the orient. It's September 30th right now. I land in Yonago on the 2nd of October. If it's already tomorrow in Japan (bless those people for living in the future), and it takes a day from here to arrive, what day is this of my trip?

Visit to Pap and Grandma's, September 18th, 2011

Onions were airing out on the sidewalk. Grandma was working on baking apple pie. Pap was in the mood to look at old photos and talk about flowers. We had iced tea. They sent me home with a handful of sub-prime but salvageable pineapple tomatoes.

The Lawnmower Became Curious

I went with my mother to pick up some corn at Eichner's Farm in Wexford. Pap goes crazy for this corn in a way no 93 year-old really should for anything. I took a minute to get a snapshot of the vintage lawnmower in the front yard.

If you tie a goat to a stick and just let it be a goat for a few hours, you'll have a beautiful lawn with little to no effort.

Spotting Deer with the Grandparents

We were sitting outside having iced tea and catching up. Pap, his eyeballs old but still remarkably useful, spotted deer over the hill.

Hilda, get the binoculars.

We counted the deer, a small herd, and went back to drinking tea.
