It's easier to peer into a life being lived inside when the lights are on and drapes are drawn. With windows bare, you'd see straight through, likely to off-white walls the landlord probably wouldn't allow them to paint. It's by the backlit curtains that you see colors. Colors from the fabric, colors from the light as expressed by blue neon CFL and yellow incandescence bulbs. It's in the colors you see choices they've made, some signs of who they are.
