It's easier to peer into a life being lived inside when the lights are on and drapes are drawn. With windows bare, you'd see straight through, likely to off-white walls the landlord probably wouldn't allow them to paint. It's by the backlit curtains that you see colors.

I walked past just as the shopkeeper finished yanking the underwear off this mannequin. She then scurried towards the back of the store. The scene was quietly comical, strangely erotic, mildly unsettling.

I think of the spacious suburbs and spawling parking lots when I think of malls. I am surprised that there's one in New York City. There's nothing spacious about NYC. But Queens has one, in Elmhurst.
