Lap Swimming with the German Couchsurfers

couchsurfers in front of red hook pool

I brought my Couchsurfers along for the night owl lap swim.

Kristina, in the middle, is into swimming. Her friends Bastian and Felix, not so much. They hung out on the pool deck while Kristina and I did laps. She has way better technique than I do.

Strangers in the background is a distracting element in a shot, but significant in context of this moment. Taking the photo, we all noticed the kids eating on the steps1234. And that all the people sitting on the steps were black.

Simply Remembering my Favorite Things.

corn cob red hook pool summer

Few things make me happier in New York City than splashing around in the free, open lanes at the Red Hook Pool and gorging at the food trucks around the nearby soccer fields. I've pedaled down this way from Williamsburg two or three times weekly but they only have the trucks on the weekends. And, with today's plunge, that's it for the season - the pool closes on Labor Day.

I'm usually pretty elated and twitchy coming out of the water. Given that, this was as close to a focus as I could get.
