Hurricane Sandy, Occupy Sandy and a trip to Brighton Beach.
I don't align myself with the Occupy protestors, but I do think they have one of the better organized efforts providing hurricane relief in NYC. It's still somewhat chaotic.
I volunteered as a driver with my car to haul a group of volunteers, a load of supplies and hot food to the Coney Island area. After some confusion at our destination – they were overloaded with supplies at our target location – we delivered our supplies two miles away to a small church in Brighton Beach.
It was not immediately clear if our supplies were necessary, or if their redistribution would become a burden to the church. I got the feeling there was more than enough stuff to eat and wear for the moment.
Power is still not on in parts of the island. Police and National Guard are everywhere. Lines of people waiting for food at distrubution center stretch around blocks.
It's grim.
